We all love a nice, neat looking LEGO Collection. However, the biggest challenge that comes with displaying your collection is keeping it clean. Dust, the greatest Lego villain, can easily accumulate on your LEGO creations without you even knowing it. Fortunately, with the right preventative measures, cleaning techniques, and regular upkeep, you can keep your LEGO looking fresh and dust-free.
1. Using Display Cases and Covers
The best defence I have found is display cases and covers. Now this won’t work for your LEGO City but is great for smaller sets and minifigure collections.
- Tip: Ensure your display cases seal completely or you may only end up with dust reduction not removal.
- Ideas: If you do have a larger set or city perhaps a cloth cover may be an option. While not ideal as it has the potential to break pieces off during its removal in the right situation it could be helpful.
2. Cleaning Techniques: Safe Methods for Cleaning LEGO Bricks
The goal with cleaning is to do it regularly. Like with anywhere else in the house dust will settle and if continually treated will just need a quick wipe with a duster or cloth. But once it’s been there for a while you need to do a proper clean which can be very time consuming and frustrating.
- Tip: Always use a soft microfiber cloth or a gentle brush to wipe off dust. Avoid using harsh cleaning products, as they can leave residue or damage the plastic. For more stubborn dust, use a small, soft paintbrush or a compressed air canister to blow dust out from hard-to-reach crevices. Another option is a USB powered vacuum which many collectors have success with.
- Ideas: For larger dust build-up, disassemble sections of your city and clean them separately. You can rinse LEGO pieces with lukewarm water if they need a deeper clean but be sure to dry them thoroughly to prevent water spots or warping. If you intend of putting LEGO through a washing machine or dishwasher just place it in a delicates bag first, it will save you having to pull small parts out of your filter.
3. Maintaining Pristine Displays: Regular Upkeep Tips
Regular maintenance is key to keeping your LEGO dust-free over time. Even with preventative measures and careful cleaning, dust can still accumulate and settle into tiny corners. A consistent cleaning schedule will help ensure that your city stays looking pristine without too much effort.
- Tip: Set aside a specific time each month or every few weeks to lightly dust your LEGO.
- Ideas: Consider rotating pieces in and out of displays / city to minimise exposure to dust.
What I chose to do
Brick Lake City (my LEGO city on a shelf) is located in the main living room of our house. This setup has both pros and cons compared to having a dedicated space. The primary downside is how accessible the city is to the sticky fingers of small children. However, this also plays into its biggest advantage: accessibility.
One of the best things I’ve done to minimise dust is placing the city in a spot I pass by every day. This keeps its care and maintenance at the forefront of my mind, helping me stay consistent with upkeep. While I still keep some minifigures and advent sets in cases, I primarily maintain the city with regular light dusting.
